17th roar [ video + action for cianwood ]

Another one of those weekends.

[ Leon doesn't sound entirely unhappy, mostly just...tired. Resigned. Beside him is Skarmory, looking distracted, but certainly more chipper than her trainer. ]

Don't know how we got to Cianwood, but I decided it'd be best not to let it go to waste. The gym here uses Fighting-type pokémon, so Skarmory didn't have any trouble.

[ Skarmory chirrs, satisfied. Leon scratches her throat absently. He holds up the Storm Badge, watching it glint in the light before tucking it away. ]

She can Fly, now, which means she can carry people on her back. Or she's supposed to.

[ He remembers the last time all too clearly; he'd wound up in the Sprout Tower moat, along with Kay. Luckily, that hadn't been deep, but this was the ocean. And Leon can't swim, but he's not sure if he wants to just accounce it publicly. ]

Is there anyone in Cianwood who'd be willing to give Skarmory a test drive? Someone...smaller.

[ Leon looks back, arches a brow, sizes the younger man up. Skarmory chirps a quiet greeting. ]

It's for her to get comfortable, too.

[ So yes, size does matter! Leon is operating on the idea that Skarmory would spend less energy flying with a lighter load and can therefore focus on the hows of things. ]

*Hayate is giving a polite wave to the Skarmory in response to that chirp, while the Lucario at his side slinks behind his legs to watch.*

Ahhh... Then you're worried you'll weigh too much and put a strain on her? *tilting his head a bit, looking Leon over...* You don't look that heavy...

[ Leon pauses, lips tightening, as that sinks in. No, he doesn't do as much heavy lifting in Johto as he did back home, but why do people keep thinking he doesn't weigh that much? Just because he no longer breaks two hundred...doesn't mean he isn't still close. ]

I don't doubt that she can carry me. [ Skarmory croons to her boss appreciatively. ] I doubt that she can carry me comfortably in the air on the first try.

Ah... *Nod nod* Basically, you want her to have a test run before you take part in the main event! That's reasonable enough. Have you had any volunteers yet?

[ At that, Leon relaxes a bit, then shakes his head. ] Not yet.

[ A glance. Is this young man...offering? ]

Really? That's a little surprising! I think the would be more interest in the 'Take a test ride on the big metal bird!' offer. It's the kind of thing kids would dream of! That or flying on robots. But it's kind of close.

*... he is considering it! He isn't exactly the heaviest guy around*

[ At this burst of enthusiasm, Skarmory caws lightly, reaching forward to tug at Hayate's sleeve. LESS TALKING MORE FLYING???

Meanwhile, all Leon can do is rub the bridge of his nose and think 'she's not a robot. Not even close.' ]

--ah! Whoa-- *looking a tad surprised at this sleeve tugging, before he glances over to Leon.* Ummm... If it's okay with you, I suppose I could be your test pilot? ... er... Test bird rider...?

[ Leon simply nods, motioning. After you, Hayate. Even though he's just met the boy, it's not like he really has anything to worry about. Skarmory can handle herself just fine.

Speaking of which, Skarmory happily prances closer to Hayate, folding her legs. This way, he can get on without having to climb. ]

*Ho boy. Hayate is giving his Lucario a pat on the head to reassure her as she eyes the metal bird with a bit of worry, only stepping back to watch once Hayate himself is carefully mounting the Skarmory as gently as possible. ... which is a little awkward when the bird is made of metal*

Er, um... *Making a tiny gesture once he is seated* To... To infinity and beyond...?

[ There's a long stretch of silence accompanying that remark, as neither Skarmory nor her trainer are certain what it means. Skarmory chirrs once, before looking to her boss for help. Leon crosses his arms. ]

I think he means 'go'.

[ Skarmory flaps her wings happily. She can do that! In fact she can do that right now. She unfolds all at once, bolting down the road in preparation for a takeoff!

HAYATE ARE YOU READY FOR THIS.

Meanwhile, Leon looks at Hayate's Lucario, feeling a little bad, suddenly. ]

He'll be fine. Probably.

*If he wasn't currently holding onto the Skarmory with wide eyed shock at how sudden this take off was going, he would have totally made a secondary comment about landing gear or buzzing the tower or some such reference. For now though, he will settle on gripping what he can oh god oh god.

... Azure, however, gives Leon a rather worried look at that probably, letting out a quiet growl of a bark in response. It's tough being able to perfectly understand human speech*

[ Skarmory is too pleased to care! She can finally stretch her wings for real! As the road stretches out to the beach, Skarmory makes a running leap just before the sand, and beats her wings vigorously--it works. They have liftoff!

Leon awkward pats Azure's shoulder, despite her relative height. His pokemon generally understand him; the problem is the language barrier in the other direction. Azure's bark of distress is hard to misinterpret, though. ]

He can swim, right? Worst that can happen is he falls into the ocean.

*Ahhhhhhhhhh this is like clinging to the outside of a jet as it slowly takes offfff!!! Hayate can do nothing but hold on like it's the edge of a cliff and below him lies tons and tons of spikes that would instantly make him explode into pixels!

Azure watches this liftoff with wiiiiide eyed surprise, before sloooowly nodding twice in response to Leon's question... If nothing else, she figures it can't be worse than being dragged underwater by a Tentacruel.*

[ They do go slower once they're actually in the air, but the downside is--it's a lot more wobbly, as Skarmory gets her bearings. She's never done with someone on her back before! A gust of wind catches her side and pushes her; the added weight of Hayate makes her tilt precariously.

Leon is watching the scene with less concern but just as much surprise. A part of him wasn't expecting that to actually work. If Hayate falls, he tells himself, he has a Tentacruel of his own to help--one that won't pull Hayate underwater, for one. ]

I should have put on my goggles for this-! *If nothing else being able to comment on it means he's not horrified! Though Hayate is thankful the Skarmory is all steel and metalic like this, since he's clinging to her neck pretty tightly now! At least he's... trying to lean to the side opposite of where they're tilting to help her stay... relatively balanced. Results may vary.

Azure is just worriedly holding her paws to her mouth at the whole display. If it gets any more precarious looking she might even have to cover her eyes.*

[ Another wind catches her and she banks sharply in the other direction. They appear to be heading for the water before she rights herself, and begins to rise.

She croons encouragingly to Hayate. Keep holding on, Mister! She's getting the hang of this!

Leon's heart does a little dive when Skarmory seems poised for a dive, but he visibly relaxes when the pair pull up. ]

*Encouragement helps! It helps a lot!! Even if Hayate can't particularly realize it is encouraging due to that sudden roller coaster ride moment. Once he survives this he is going to tell Leon to invest in some kind of harness to hold onto cause there is no way he can picture a guy like that clinging to a metal bird for dear life.

... then again, maybe that's why he wanted someone else to break her in...

And yes. Azure has definitely upgraded to hiding her eyes. Only peeking through her paws every few seconds to make sure doom has not fallen.*

[ Leon gives the poor Lucario a sideways glance. ]

I'll tell you when it's safe to look.

[ Ten points for Hayate! This is indeed why Leon wanted someone else to man the maiden flight. Hopefully by the end of this Skarmory will be flying considerably straighter than she started out.

Now is not yet that time, however, and Skarmory does some more zigzagging, letting the wind carry her up and down. It takes a few dips before she's secure and, at least, flying at a relatively stable height. Not necessarily in a straight line, but it's a start! ]

A-At this time I would like to thank my stomach for being iron cast and not susceptible to weakness...! *Since really. All that zigzagging would definitely be making a normal man be full of ten different regrets about what he ate for lunch and dinner that day. So instead of regret, Hayate shall just continue clinging to this bird and do his best to stay as centered as possible on her.

Azure will thank you for that information when it comes, Leon. She can't handle the possible horror*

[ Skarmory appreciates the effort Hayate is making, because she calls to him again. She only very lightly to the side this time, with more purpose, bringing them into a lazy curve, carried by the wind. There, this is better! ]

*... it is better!! In fact Hayate is relaxing significantly now, the death grip clinging turning into a more lax grip but still a... very firm one.* Haaaa... Starting to feel less like a roller coaster and more like a bumpy bike ride...

[ Now that Skarmory's starting to get comfortable, she's also starting to get more adventurous...Hayate, you might wanna tell her a passenger flight and a solo flight shouldn't be the same thing. You know, before she dives.

--haha, too late. ]

[ As soon as he sees Skarmory drop, Leon cups his hand around his mouth and bellows: ]

Skarmory, pull up!

[ His voice carries over the water and surprises Skarmory, who abruptly stops diving and gets back to cruising altitude. Seeming to realize her misstep, she glances worriedly back at Hayate and offers a reassuring chirp. Okay back there? Does he want to get down? ]
